Legal

Legal stuff! Yay! Don’t you simply love unreadable documents!? Unlike other companies we will have two sections – one where we tell you what we think you should know about our products and services – in a way that we would have liked to have read it ourselves.

Then there’s a section just for lawyers….

For users (read this, it's easy)

Privacy

Ubikron is software that helps you keep track of research that happens in your browser. It does this by recording web pages you visit. The architecture of the software is such that information is not stored in the client, it’s rather sent up to the server. So, think of it as your browser history++, but sent to a server on the Internet. We are very transparent about this.

This means that you’ll obviously need to be aware of privacy concerns. We do the following to try to help you control what's recorded:

At any time, it’s very easy to switch off tracking/recording of sites. You can switch off recording with one click – in the widget or in the UI. By default, the widget is clearly visible on each site. We provide an easy way to set the software so it doesn’t record certain sites. We provide useful defaults – out the box it’s set to not record Gmail, Google docs and others. The same functionality also allows you to permanently delete sites and pages, should they be inadvertently recorded. The list of ‘do-not-record’ websites can and should be maintained by you and we offer import and export functionality of the list.

We understand that even then, certain sites may still be inadvertently recorded. Here is what to remember. The software assumes you’re using it for investigation or research purposes, and you are only browsing research related sites. Most professionals will use a separate Virtual Machine per investigation. We offer private servers, meaning your data will only be visible to yourself. We offer the public server only so you can see how the software works without having to install your own server. We even provide a FREE (but limited to one user) server. So don't use the public server if you're concerned about privacy.

Besides all of the above, we can assure you / we promise that we don’t look at user data. In today’s world of where the truth means very little, this cannot carry much weight, but it’s all we have right now. Our integrity is all we have to offer. We do our best to secure our software and infrastructure, but there's always a chance that we will be totally compromised and if you're using our Internet facing servers your data might be compromised too. Think that your browsing history will be made public. We'll do our best to ensure this never happens, but this is the real world, and we're upfront about this.

Software License Agreement

  • If you use the software and in doing so you violate laws or terms of use or you piss off some tech giant or government – it’s all on you. Not us. Don’t even try to say we made you do it or we’ve enabled you. It’s all on you.
  • If the software blows up your computer or your network or your house or so on – it’s still on you. We do our best to ensure there is no malware in our software. However we cannot guarantee that our source code hasn’t been compromised by a state-level bad actor. It would be be a sad day though and we’re pretty diligent to ensure that doesn’t happen.
  • Mileage might vary – there is no guarantee that the software works exactly as you wish. We will do our best to not have bugs in our software, but let’s be fair – that’s also wishful thinking. Our worst nightmare is if you lose data due to corrupt databases or faulty exports. But – in full disclosure – that can happen.
  • For people using the public server – in order to develop (pretty niche) custom software at that price point we can’t really afford to do extensive support. It's free to use, so don't expect too much support. We'll try to help, but we're helping paying customers first.
